My wealthy parents cut me off when I married my high school sweetheart who came from nothing — but on our wedding night in our cheap motel room, he sat on the edge of the bed and said, “There’s something I should have told you before we got married.”
My husband, Leo, and I have been together since we met in our high school chemistry class. Even though we walked the same hallways every day, we came from completely different worlds.
I grew up in a very affluent household where expectations were extremely high. Leo grew up on the opposite side of town, raised by a single mom who worked two jobs just to keep the lights on.
But none of that mattered, because we fell incredibly hard for each other. While other guys were intimidated by my family’s money or tried to use it, Leo was the only one who looked past the wealth and just saw me.
He couldn’t afford expensive dates or fancy bouquets, so every morning before first period, he would wait by my locker with a small bunch of wildflowers he had picked on his walk to school.
When we got engaged last year, my parents gave me an ultimatum. They expected me to marry someone from our social circle, not a guy who worked as a mechanic. When I chose Leo, they completely cut me off. No trust fund, no financial help, no contact.
Because of that, we couldn’t afford a traditional wedding. We got married at the local courthouse yesterday afternoon with just two friends as our witnesses.
Afterward, we grabbed some takeout and checked into a cheap roadside motel just off the interstate for a quick weekend honeymoon. Honestly, I didn’t care about the peeling wallpaper. I was just happy to finally be his wife.
Later that evening, I came out of the bathroom and found Leo sitting on the edge of the mattress, staring quietly at his hands.
I asked him if he was okay.
When he looked up, his expression was completely serious.
