My husband’s parents stayed with us for six months, and after they finally returned home, I went to strip the bed in the guest room. But when I lifted the mattress, what I found hidden underneath made the bl00d drain from my face.
My husband, Zachary, and I have always had an incredibly strong marriage. We’ve always taken pride in being a solid team. So when his parents’ house suffered serious water damage last winter, we didn’t hesitate to let them stay with us in our first-floor guest room. We thought the repairs would take only a few weeks, but somehow, those few weeks stretched into six months.
I won’t pretend that having your in-laws under the same roof for half a year is easy. His mother, Jacqueline, is an extremely private person. From the moment they moved in, she made it politely but unmistakably clear that she wanted to handle their room herself. She washed their linens, vacuumed the floors, and always kept the door closed whenever neither of them was inside. I respected her privacy, so I mostly stayed out of their way.
Yesterday morning, their house was finally ready. We helped carry their suitcases out to the car, hugged them goodbye, and watched as they drove away. Once we stepped back inside, Zachary and I both released a huge sigh of relief. For the first time in six months, the house was completely peaceful, and we finally had our own space back.
This morning, I decided to give the guest room a thorough cleaning before converting it back into my home office. I opened the windows to bring in some fresh air and began stripping the bed.
When I pulled at one corner of the fitted sheet, I found it wedged so tightly underneath the mattress that I had to raise the mattress slightly to free the elastic.
Something moved underneath.
I froze, rested the mattress against my knee, and reached underneath it.
The moment I looked down and realized what had been hidden there for the entire six months they had lived with us, my bl00d ran cold.
