THE LITTLE DOOR UNDER THE RIVER
PART 1 — The Door
“Every night, Mia heard someone knocking from beneath the river. Then one night, the river answered her.”
Mia lived in a small village beside a quiet river.
Everyone in the village had one rule:
Never go near the river after sunset.
Mia never understood why.
One rainy evening, while walking home, she heard something strange.
Knock… knock… knock.
She stopped.
The sound was coming from the river.
Mia looked at the dark water.
Again.
Knock… knock… knock.
She stepped closer.
Suddenly, the water began glowing with a soft golden light.
Then Mia saw something beneath the surface.
A tiny wooden door.
She could see a silver handle.
Her heart raced.
“How can there be a door under the river?”
Before she could move, the door slowly opened.
A warm light spilled into the water.
And a tiny voice whispered:
“Mia… we’ve been waiting for you.”
Mia stepped backward.
“How do you know my name?”
The voice answered:
“Because your grandmother came here before you.”
Mia froze.
Her grandmother had disappeared when Mia’s mother was a child.
And nobody in the village had ever explained what happened to her.
Then the little door opened wider.
Something small climbed out.
It looked like a tiny child made of golden light.
It pointed toward the door.
“Your grandmother left something for you.”
Mia reached for the handle.
But before she could open the door—
the entire river suddenly turned black.
PART 2 — The Hidden Village
“Mia opened the door beneath the river—and discovered a world that had been hidden for more than fifty years.”
The black water suddenly became still.
Mia grabbed the glowing child’s hand.
Together, they stepped through the tiny door.
Instead of getting wet, Mia landed on a stone path.
She looked around in amazement.
Beneath the river was an entire hidden village.
Tiny houses floated beneath the water.
Golden lanterns hung from enormous trees.
Small glowing creatures moved between the buildings.
But nobody was smiling.
Everyone was staring at Mia.
An old woman slowly walked toward her.
Mia couldn’t believe her eyes.
The woman looked exactly like the photograph of her grandmother.
“Grandma?”
The old woman smiled.
“You finally came.”
Mia ran into her arms.
“Why did you leave us?”
Her grandmother looked toward the dark sky above them.
“I didn’t leave you, Mia. I was protecting your family.”
“Protecting us from what?”
Before her grandmother could answer, the ground began shaking.
The golden lights went out one by one.
A huge shadow moved through the water above them.
Everyone became silent.
Her grandmother grabbed Mia’s hand.
“We don’t have much time.”
She gave Mia a small blue key.
“This key can close the door forever.”
Mia looked confused.
“Then why don’t we just close it?”
Her grandmother whispered:
“Because the door isn’t keeping something out.”
She looked toward the darkness.
“It’s keeping something in.”
Suddenly, something enormous slammed against the hidden village.
Cracks appeared in the walls.
Mia looked up.
Two giant eyes opened in the darkness.
And they were looking directly at her.
PART 3 — The Last Light
“Mia finally learned why the river had been hiding a secret—and why her grandmother had waited all these years for her.”
The hidden village was falling apart.
Mia held the blue key tightly.
“What am I supposed to do?”
Her grandmother pointed toward the center of the village.
There stood an ancient golden bell.
“Ring the bell,” she said.
“What will happen?”
“It will wake the river.”
Mia ran toward the bell.
Behind her, the enormous creature moved closer.
Its shadow covered the entire village.
Mia climbed the stone steps.
She lifted the bell hammer.
But the bell wouldn’t move.
Then she remembered what her grandmother had told her.
The door doesn’t keep something out. It keeps something in.
Mia understood.
The creature wasn’t trying to enter the village.
It was trying to escape.
She placed the blue key into a small hole beneath the bell.
The entire village began glowing.
Mia pulled the bell rope.
BOOOOOONG!
A wave of golden light exploded through the water.
The creature screamed and disappeared into the darkness.
Then everything became quiet.
The river began flowing normally again.
Mia looked at her grandmother.
“Is it over?”
Her grandmother smiled.
“For now.”
Mia stepped back through the little door.
When she reached the riverbank, the sun was rising.
The door beneath the water had disappeared.
For the first time in fifty years, the village river was completely clear.
Mia thought the mystery was finally over.
Then she noticed something beside her feet.
A tiny golden shell.
She picked it up.
From inside came three soft knocks.
Knock… knock… knock.
Mia slowly looked toward the river.
A second little door appeared beneath the water.
But this one wasn’t golden.
It was red.
And behind it…
something was knocking back.
THE END… OR THE BEGINNING.
