PART 1

On the morning of our tenth wedding anniversary, I reached up half-asleep to touch my hair.

Empty. Cold. My fingers met only naked, chilled scalp.

A wave of suffocating shock detonated in my chest. I scrambled to the bathroom mirror: every single lock of my long brown hair had been ruthlessly shorn off while I slept! On my pillow lay an eleven-word note in my husband Julian’s elegant script: “Now you finally look as ridiculous as you really are.”

I froze in horror. Then, a dry, jagged laugh clawed its way up my throat.

How absurdly pathetic! For ten years, I had blinded myself, making excuses for his condescension and covert cruelty. And my decade of devotion was rewarded with this cowardly humiliation. The shock died. No tears fell. In their place, an icy, lethal resolve forged inside my bones.

Right then, my phone shrilled. My late father’s estate attorney was on the line: “Evelyn, I need final confirmation. Are we transferring the eighteen-million-dollar inheritance into your joint account with Julian this afternoon?”

I stared at my reflection—bald, hollowed out, but eyes blazing with deadly clarity.

“No, Margaret,” I said, my voice steady as an executioner’s blade. “Cancel the transfer. Lock it down permanently. Do not let him touch a single cent.”

At nine, Julian strolled into the kitchen, smirking: “It was just a joke, Evelyn. It’ll grow back. Don’t make a scene.”

He genuinely believed I would weep, forgive him, and hand him an eighteen-million-dollar fortune by dusk. He had no idea the noose was already tightening around his neck.

I retained the city’s most ruthless divorce attorney by noon. As I walked to my car, my phone buzzed with an urgent text from my best friend: “Evelyn, look at this right now!”

Photos populated the screen: Julian touring a luxury waterfront estate, his arm wrapped around a young blonde.

Then, my eyes locked onto the timestamp, and the air vanished from my lungs.

It was dated two weeks before my father died.

He hadn’t hatched this plan after the inheritance dropped. This monster had been having an affair, counting down the days until my father died so he could steal his empire!
